What Color Diamond is the Most Expensive?

No matter why you’re buying a diamond, you’re probably going into the process with a budget in mind. So, it’s not out of the question to ask, “What color diamond is the most expensive?”

You don’t have to stick with a colorless diamond if you want a ring with a bit more personality. Diamonds, both lab-made and naturally grown, come in all kinds of breathtaking colors. Here’s what to expect for the price of several different diamond colors.

What Color Diamond is the Most Expensive?

While white diamonds are easily the most commonplace stone in the jewelry world, they don’t take the top spot in terms of price. The most expensive diamond color is red.

Red diamonds are incredibly rare; in fact, it’s believed that only around 20-30 red diamonds currently exist. It’s not uncommon for diamonds to become naturally colored during the formation process, but the red hue is the least likely shade you’ll find.

Red diamonds are usually quite small and are almost always under a carat in size. Still, don’t let a tiny stone fool you. These diamonds normally cost over $1 million per carat! The most expensive red diamond on record weighed in at 5.11 carats and sold for a whopping $8 million.

Other Diamond Colors by Price

If you want a colored diamond but can’t bring yourself to shell out the money for a red stone, don’t worry. There are plenty of other colored diamonds that you can find at much more affordable price points.

After red, blue diamonds are the next most expensive variety. The blue color comes from the boron that replaces some of the carbon within the diamond structure during the formation process. Blue diamonds are still expensive, coming in at around $200,000 per carat, but the price tag is certainly smaller than a comparable red diamond.

Next is a special pink diamond known as the Argyle diamond. This diamond is only mined from one mine in Australia, the Argyle Mine, which is part of the reason for the high price. Pink diamonds are intriguing because scientists haven’t yet figured out where the stones’ romantic hue comes from. Standard pink diamonds can range anywhere from $10,000 to $700,000 per carat.

Yellow diamonds are among the most popular diamond colors, and since they’re quite commonplace compared to other varieties, they’re also relatively inexpensive. A yellow diamond will typically cost around $3,000 to $5,000 per carat.
